US Collector Coin Sales - July 3

Proof sets were the biggest winner in the latest round of US Mint collector coin sales figures. Sales of the 18-coin clad sets leaped by 106,987. It was the strongest showing after the initial launch days. 684,412 have now been purchased in 28 days.

The US Mint on Thursday launched the 2009 Letitia Tyler First Spouse Gold Coins. The 24-karat, $10 denominated commemoratives are available in two options - proof for the price of $629 and uncirculated for $616. A bronze medal bearing a likeness of the gold coins is also available for $3.50.

A consumer watchdog organization has recovered nearly $900,000 for buyers who paid far more for coins than they were worth. The money represented full refunds in 16 recent disputes, according to the New Jersey-based not-for-profit group, the Numismatic Consumer Alliance, Inc. (NCA).

The 1876-CC (Carson City, Nevada) Twenty Cent piece is the rarest date of this short lived denomination, and it is a famous Great Rarity. In a Sept. 2008 article on CoinLink, I tentatively estimated that between eighteen and twenty-six exist. As a result of further research, I am changing my estimate to a range of fifteen to nineteen, which is in line with estimates put forth by a few other researchers.
